Malaysia’s Kavin Mohan beat out 41 other participants to emerge the champion in the 14th Asian Schools Blitz Chess Championship (Under 7) in Sri Lanka a week ago.
He bested participants from more established chess countries such as India, China , Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. Interestingly, all the chess players from these countries were accompanied by their coaches/trainers. The Malaysian contingent consisted of two parents and a Head of Delegation besides the players themselves.
Other winners in the Malaysian contingent are Sim Jia Ru (Silver in U-13 Girl rapid category ) and Mukhriez Shah (Bronze in U-13 Open). Sim Jia Ru has also qualified for the Women’s Candidate Master title by virtue of being in the top three.
